Hope for a new chapter Silicon production in Niagara Falls could bolster "green" economy Buffalo News June 30, 2008Globe Specialty Metals is promising to locate in Niagara Falls, spending $60 million to reconfigure the existing metallurgical-grade silicon plant on Highland Avenue, which closed in 2003, to produce silicon products for the solar power industry. There's a lot to like in that promise. The project would revive a distressed brownfield area in Niagara Falls, and Globe proposes that a quarter of its production can be earmarked to induce a solar panel manufacturer to the area. The state would gain significant leverage - the ability to offer 25 percent of what Globe is manufacturing - in its efforts to lure spinoff industry to an area that needs redevelopment attention. ...
