Another pollution vent added at Vestal site

VESTAL -- Work to safeguard against TCE pollution at a Vestal plaza will continue this summer as workers add a second system to pull vapors from under the foundation.

The work at 1808 Vestal Parkway East is part of a larger plan to clean the site, once occupied by Hidden Valley Electronics, and a neighborhood to the north.

Trichloroethylene pollution runs from under the plaza -- now occupied by American Family Fitness and several other businesses -- under Vestal Parkway and a nearby rail trail, into the Twin Orchards neighborhood.

After testing more than 60 homes and three businesses in the area, officials installed systems to remove high TCE concentrations below 13 of the homes and the fitness center.
