DEQ bond issue proposal won't be on Nov. 4 ballot by Brooke Meier Spinal Column Newsweekly (MI) August 06, 2008A lack of "political will" among state lawmakers has stalled the state Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) quest to obtain voter authorization in November on a bond proposal to provide funds for cleanup projects across the state, including at the Waterford Hills Sanitary Landfill on Gale Road in Waterford Township. The DEQ sought approval of a 2008 general election ballot proposal to net approximately $1.3 billion in bond revenue to fund contamination cleanups and help with water protection. Robert McCann, a spokesperson for the DEQ, said the department had the support of various environmental and interest groups; however, there was no interest in the Legislature to place the proposal on the Nov. 4 ballot. "The bond issue is dead (for 2008), and the reality is there is no clear political will to get it passed," McCann said. "Hopefully we can get some bridging money to keep the cleanup projects running at a minimal level and get us through to 2010, when we can try again (to get a bond proposal on a statewide ballot)." ...
