Residents want more pollution data

Clinton West Plaza neighbors frustrated by lack of information

ITHACA - Environmental investigations in and around the Clinton West 
Plaza have just started, which accounts in part for why answers at a 
Monday night public meeting were so hard to come by.

There was also evident frustration among some of the 35-40 residents in 
attendance about what is already known but wasn't being shared with them.

"I felt like it was a lot of work to extract information," Valerie Pavan 
said after the meeting. Pavan is a Southside resident who said she lives 
"500 feet away" from the Clinton West Plaza on Plain Street.

Detections of tetrachloroethylene, or PERC; trichloroethylene, or TCE; 
and other potentially carcinogenic compounds were described as low and 
non-problematic, but neither Fagan engineers, the consultant hired by 
Clinton West Ltd., nor representatives from the state departments of 
Health and Environmental Conservation could provide any information 
about exactly what was detected and at what levels.
