Recycling oil: Canton lands 'green' jobs at former brownfield site

Canton Repository (OH)

CANTON Hydrodec is starting off green and hoping to make the world a greener place. The British-based company created more than 30 environmentally friendly jobs here when it began to operate an oil reprocessing plant on a reclaimed brownfield site.

Specifically, Hydrodec processes oil used to insulate and cool electric transformers so it can be used again and again. The electric power industry is huge and requires large and small transformers to switch the power from low to high voltage for transmission over long distances and back again, said Hydrodec President John Cowan.

Over time - about 10 years - the oil degrades. Past practice has been to discard the oil and burn it for fuel. Then it's replaced with new oil, a large portion of which is imported, Cowan said. Using Hydrodec's recycled oil also stabilizes the price because it's not determined by crude oil commodity fluctuations, he said.
