BLIGHT WATCH: Ex-Marhoefer eyesore still ‘just sitting there’

MUNCIE - The owner of the 24-acre site known as the former Marhoefer 
Meat Packing Co., which went bankrupt in the late 1970s, has denied the 
city access to the site to conduct an environmental assessment and 
sample for contaminants.

"He drove to Muncie to meet with us and was very nice but said he was 
not interested," said Gretchen Cheesman, director of the city's unsafe 
building hearing authority, referring to Manuel Romo, an Indianapolis 
scrap dealer.

"It's blighted," Cheesman said. "It's not mowed. Parts of it are secure 
and parts aren't. It's vacant. Just being vacant alone is a nuisance. We 
probably need to do a coordinated, inter-departmental code enforcement 
effort because it's vacant and the buildings are not up to code and 
there’s junk out there."
