Cleveland: Mayor files suit to recover costs from brownfield cleanup

WKYC-TV 3 News (Cleveland, OH)

CLEVELAND -- The City of Cleveland on Tuesday filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for money spent cleaning up a brownfield site.

A brownfield is defined as an abandoned or under-used industrial or commercial site that could be redeveloped and reused.

The suit seeks compensation from Standex International Corporation for money the city has spent to study and clean up the Trinity site at 9203 Detroit Road.

Jackson says the city has spent at least $1.5 million on the project.

The City of Cleveland acquired the 5.6 acre site through tax foreclosure in November 2004. Environmental clean up began in October 2006.
