Xanadu project stinks ? ethically, literally Bob Ingle East Brunswick Scarlet Scuttlebutt (NJ) January 25, 2009 From the Meadowlands comes word the Xanadu site has turned up oozing drums of material, leaking fuel tanks and all manner of other ugly stuff you wouldn't want to subject your family to, although pollution will remain a concern after the giant shopping and entertainment center opens. A project engineer wrote that in a report a newspaper made public. The project's developers say, not to worry, visitors will be insulated from buried pollution by building foundations, concrete parking lots and such. "Finding contamination like this in brownfield sites is typical," said John Samerjan, spokesman for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which owns the site. Jeff Tittel of the Sierra Club disagreed that's typical and blames the Department of Environmental Protection, which he said allowed Xanadu to proceed under the administration of former Gov. (and priest wannabe) Jim McGreevey. Darlene Yuhas of the DEP told The Record the project thus far has met all requirements set down by the department. Now, that's scary. ...
