Report: Use Michigan 'brownfields' as energy parks By JAMES PRICHARD, Associated Press Chicago Tribune January 27, 2009 WALKER, Mich. After losing tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs in recent years, Michigan has no shortage of abandoned, run-down factory sites for which state and local leaders are trying to find new purposes. Michigan State University researchers released a report Tuesday recommending the redevelopment of unused or underutilized industrial areas as renewable energy parks. The report suggests some of these "brownfields" could be used for the installation of solar panels or wind turbines capable of generating an estimated 5,855 megawatts of electricity -- enough to power about 1.8 million, or nearly 50 percent, of Michigan's homes. ...
