Design Center owner eyes tower plans on nearby lot by Susan Stabley Charlotte Business Journal (NC) April 9, 2009The owner of Design Center of the Carolinas in South End wants to add a tower to the three-building complex. But first, the company must get permission from the state because part of the site under consideration is contaminated. Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based Ram Development Co. is mulling a residential tower - it could be condos, apartments or a hotel - with street-level shops and offices along West Worthington Avenue across the street from the center. According to documents filed with the state, the building could be 20 stories or taller. In 2007, Ram acquired the 188,146-square-foot Design Center and nearby parking lot at Camden Road and Worthington Avenue for $28.6 million. The complex is the home to Pike’s Old Fashioned Soda Shop plus several design firms. ....
