Chemical leach near Products plant leads to contamination notice By DEB WUETHRICH Tecumseh Herald (MI) April 8, 2009It's good news to many in the community that city officials, Tecumseh Products and Consolidated Biscuit Company (CBC) continue to work together toward bringing nearly 500 jobs to Tecumseh over a period of the next five years. That work, however, has included some time-consuming tasks to ensure that the property occupied by Tecumseh Products for more than 70 years will not pass on any inherited problems to its new owner. During Phase 2 investigations required by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), reports have revealed low levels of chemical concentrations (TCE-trichloroethene) that had leached into ground water that rises above certain levels and requires notification of anyone who might live on perimeter property. MDEQ standards list a maximum amount of certain chemicals that can be in ground water and note that this involves concentrations in which less than 1 in 1,000 people will get ill after a lifetime of exposure, according to Teresa Hess, Tecumseh Products Director of Financial Reporting and Investor Relations. She said sites that show levels above that have the potential for contamination in wells of a certain depth and surrounding property owners must be notified. Hess said letters were expected to be mailed yet this week to the 20 or 30 property owners who could be affected, including some businesses. It will be accompanied with a question and answer attachment to help address and allay property owner's concerns, Hess said. ...
