Many reasons to move downtown Opinion by William Colvin Bennington Banner (VT) April 14, 2009I would like to thank the Bennington Banner for its continuing coverage of the efforts to secure a downtown location for use as state offices for all, or some, of the employees displaced as a result of health concerns at the Bennington state office building on Veterans Memorial Drive. As the legislative session heads into the home stretch, Bennington is on the verge of losing out on a tremendous economic development opportunity for its downtown. The House Corrections and Institutions Committee has recommended wording in the 2010 capital bill that directs the administration to gut and rehabilitate a portion of the existing office building and raze and reconstruct another portion to move all the Bennington employees back into the building they vacated. ...Approximately one-half of the employees at the office building work for the Agency of Human Services. All of these employees can be housed on the second floor of 210 South St. The well-documented issues with airborne TCE in the building have been addressed with a state-of-the-art mitigation system, and the building has now been tested twice with no detection of TCE or other contaminants. ...
