City makes pitch for 'green' projects Officials seek support, funds for landfill, industrial sites By KIM BARTO Martinsville Bulletin (VA) May 3, 2009Fifth District U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello said he is “determined to make sure Southside gets as much as possible” to support green, environmentally friendly projects, such as two he viewed Saturday afternoon in Martinsville. Perriello and city officials toured two potential projects that will need federal funding to be completed: the closed landfill, where officials have said capturing methane emissions from the decomposing trash can create revenue and electric power for the city, and the former American Furniture Co. and Sara Lee sites, which need environmental assessments before they can be rehabilitated for new businesses. ...
