Town seeks assurances on smelter site cleanup By Mark Esper Silverton Standard (CO) May 28, 2009State and federal officials met with Silverton trustees last week and assured them the cleanup at the former Walsh Smelter site will not leave them holding the bag of future liability for the brownfield project slated to become a subdivision. In a meeting at Town Hall on Wednesday, May 20, some town officials expressed concern over the town taking responsibility for the repository of slag, ash and contaminated soils on the site. "What we're most interested in is the pollution and our long-term liability," Mayor Terry Kerwin told officials with the Environmental Protection Agency and Colorado Department of Health. ...
