Now's the time to speak up on tannery Editorial Muskegon Chronicle June 3, 2009Tonight, the White Lake Public Advisory Council and the White Lake Association will host a very important meeting. The two groups, which have been instrumental along with the city of Whitehall in the cleanup of Whitehall Leather Co. property, will host representatives from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and Genesco, the former owner of the site that is responsible for the cleanup. They are expected to discuss aspects of the final cleanup proposal for the 33-acre site. The two citizen groups have demanded in a letter to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, that the contaminated former waste lagoons on the tannery site be removed. The six lagoons west of the former main tannery building contain arsenic and ammonia and might also be contributing to groundwater contamination on the site. ...
