City edges closer to reclaiming contaminated sites By Kevin Haas Rockford Register Star (IL) July 04, 2009 BELVIDERE - The land between Meadow Street and the Kishwaukee River has a story to tell.Once the home of mammoth manufacturer National Sewing Machine Co., which employed 1,200 people at its peak, the plot of land was later deemed an environmental hazard and an eyesore. "You look across the river and there are big concrete blocks and junk piled up. It's not very appealing," said Ed Marx, who lived in a home across the river at 303 E. Lincoln Ave. for 19 years. Redevelopment "is something I think the whole neighborhood is looking forward to - a change in there and bringing it up." A project to redevelop the land has inched along for more than a decade. ...
