Solar projects could sprout at old Riverside County landfills By JANET ZIMMERMAN Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) July 27, 2009Large-scale solar energy projects could be built on 1,800 acres of closed landfills and vacant property owned by Riverside County. The potential solar sites are in Highgrove, Beaumont, Corona, Mira Loma, Idyllwild, Coachella, Mecca, Desert Hot Springs and Anza; and at Double Butte landfill south of Winchester, Bundy Canyon landfill on Highway 74 between Beaumont and San Jacinto, and Mead Valley landfill in Perris. The county also is offering land near the Chiriaco Summit Airport, between Coachella Valley and Desert Center, according to documents from the county Economic Development Agency. The Exelon plant would consist of more than 30,000 solar panels on a site in Chicago's West Pullman neighborhood. Exelon says it would generate enough electricity to power about 1,200 homes. Yesterday, the city council approved a lease for the vacant industrial site, which is considered a brownfield. Alderman Carrie Austin says the project in her ward would create about 200 temporary jobs, but maybe only ten permanent ones. Still, she says, it makes a difference. ...
