DEP response to toxic barrels found at Edison site irks environmentalists By LALITA ALOOR AMUTHAN CentralJersey.com August 6, 2009EDISON - Local environmentalists are not pleased with the state Department of Environmental Protection's response to the discovery of what they say is uncontained toxic waste - including benzene, lead, PCBs and other organic chemicals - found at the Inman Sports Club. AdvertisementAbout 75 drums containing residual contaminants were left stockpiled and covered in tarp along the fence of the popular driving range at the facility, which is located at 990 Inman Ave. The drums were dug up as part of an environmental cleanup of the site, which formerly housed a paint factory. ...However, Spiegel pointed to a day care center located in front of the site and said the toxic waste poses an environmental hazard. "Instead of disposing of the drums, they stockpiled them out in the open, a few feet from the day care center," he said. ...
