Emerson still involved in cleanup By Krisy Gashler Ithaca Journal August 13, 2009Emerson will remain financially responsible for cleaning up the toxic pollution left by its predecessor, company and state officials confirmed Wednesday. Emerson spokesman Dave Baldridge said that costs associated with cleaning up the pollution were not a factor in the company's decision to close the plant. Borg Warner operated the Morse Chain factory until 1983. The company sold the plant to Emerson, which renamed it Emerson Power Transmission. Borg Warner built a new manufacturing facility in Lansing, which is still the county's largest for-profit employer. It makes components for the auto industry, and Emerson's plant serves industrial customers. In 1987, Emerson discovered that trichloroethylene (TCE), a likely carcinogen, had leaked into the factory's fire water reservoir during Morse Chain's ownership of the site. ...
