EPA to assist with asbestos By NANCY H. GONTER Springfield Republican (MA) August 13, 2009EASTHAMPTON - The federal Environmental Protection Agency has told the city it will help out with the cleanup of soil contaminated by asbestos on land where the extension of the Manhan Rail Trail is planned. Mayor Michael A. Tautznik said he believes this could allow the three-quarter mile long bike path extension as well as installation of a sewer line there to move forward. He signed an agreement with the agency last week. "We were told that it's likely that funding will be available," Tautznik said. There is no set time frame for the work, which will include an investigation of how much soil on the site off Wemelco Way was contaminated, Tautznik said. The property was once the site of a plant that manufactured Zonolite insulation for attics. The factory was operated by W. R. Grace & Co., which is reported to have shipped 258,000 tons of vermiculite ore contaminated with asbestos from Montana to Easthampton over four decades. The plant closed 20 years ago. ...
