Tesla moving HQ, power train plant to Stanford park by Katherine Conrad San Francisco Business Times August 18, 2009Tesla Motors Inc. has confirmed that it plans to lease 350,000 square feet of property once occupied by Agilent Technologies in Stanford Research Park. The electric car maker will move its headquarters from San Carlos to Palo Alto and build a power train plant there. The move to 3500 Deer Creek Road is being helped by $465 million in low-interest loans from the U.S. Energy Department. Tesla had been courted by San Francisco Bay Area cities and in Southern California. Originally Tesla planned to build its factory in San Jose. But the company needed to find a so-called "brownfield" site to qualify for the federal funding it needed. Last spring, Tesla was looking at buildings in Santa Clara and Fremont for an assembly plant. It's now looking in Los Angeles for a spot for that factory. ...
