Hopewell site shows Superfund's worth Editorial Poughkeepsie Journal (NY) August 21, 2009Despite hundreds of successes, too many sites remain on the federal Superfund cleanup list. Dutchess County has several of these sites, and federal Environmental Protection Agency representatives recently held a public meeting with dozens of residents of the affected community in Hopewell Junction. This progress has been a long time coming, and government officials must continue to work in earnest to help these residents in their ongoing plight. The so-called Hopewell Precision site involves homes along Ryan Drive, Creamery Road, Clove Branch Road and Old Farm Road. It takes its name from the company that dumped waste solvents, paints and sodium nitrate directly on the ground, in what the EPA has charitably called "sloppy, past practices." As a result of these practices, soil, several ponds and the groundwater that runs underneath the site have become contaminated with chemicals - some that have taken the form of vapors that get into the nearby homes. About 300 homes have been affected. ....
