DEP criticized by EPA, reduces oversight BY COREY KLEIN South Bergenite (NJ) September 3, 2009The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has a new way for signing off on cleanups, and some say it's equivalent to letting the foxes guard the hen house. As of Sept. 2, LSRPs (Licensed Site Remediation Professionals), consultants hired by companies responsible for the cleanups, now have the authority to sign off on environmental cleanups across the state of New Jersey. There are at least five of these kinds of cleanups currently taking place in southern Bergen County: at the former Howmedica facility on Veterans Boulevard in Rutherford, the Arsynco property on 13th Street in Carlstadt, a former Exxon gas station on Paterson Avenue in East Rutherford, a former Mobil gas station on Rutherford Avenue in Lyndhurst and a currently operating Exxon Station on Riverside Avenue in Lyndhurst. Driving around town or flipping through the local newspaper, one might notice advertisements for environmental cleanups. The DEP required companies to advertise their cleanup efforts as of Sept. 2. The new regulations for advertising cleanups came in tandem with the relaxed rules that allow companies to hire their own professionals to conduct cleanups with less oversight by the DEP. ....
