Environmental activists, mayor swap moves, counter-moves Jack Spillane New Bedford Standard-Times (MA) September 6, 2009When it comes to the contaminated land near the new Keith Middle School, it's like a game of chess between Mayor Scott Lang and the environmental activists. One side makes a move and the other side countermoves.So the mayor, at first, said the city would only pay for six of the 10 houses and a church located on contaminated land near Keith; the activists then publicly accused Lang of abandoning the other home-owners and church in the environmentally compromised neighborhood. The activists then said the EPA is the only agency that can afford to oversee the whole Keith cleanup. The mayor responded that he'll help the owners of the five residences not purchased, after all, if they really feel their land is unsafe. ....
