[NUMMI, until recently a joint venture of Toyota and GM, is the last
major auto plant in the San Francisco Bay Area. It will be difficult for
its skilled workforce to recover from the planned shutdown, but located
on the edge of Silicon Valley, the property itself is likely to be

Options weighed at NUMMI plant in Fremont by David Goll Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal September 28, 2009 FREMONT - The big question now for NUMMI is, "What's next?"Barring a dramatic reversal from Toyota Motor Corp., redevelopment appears to be in the future of the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant, which is scheduled to cease production in March. Fremont city leaders including Mayor Bob Wasserman say they prefer to see the site remain a manufacturing facility, though they view its continued operation as an automobile plant a longshot. Attracting cleantech companies to the 5.3 million-square-foot plant will be a major priority, Wasserman said. Other potential uses include retail, residential or a mixed-use commercial project featuring office, retail, residential and hotel development, he added. But each option has its associated complications, including any environmental cleanup costs at the site. And because the potential uses are so varied, no one is ready to speculate what cleanup and redevelopment might be. ...
