EPA: Contaminated site improving By ERIC WEDDLE Lafayette Journal and Courier (IN) October 14, 2009ATTICA -- Federal environmental officials say interim steps to control groundwater and air contamination in this city are making an impact. The source of the chemical contaminate has been reduced by 80 percent, and levels of a cancer-causing agent in the groundwater have been slashed since remediation began. But not all residents who live near Radio Materials Corp., a closed electronics factory where the chemicals are believed to have originated, are resting easy. During a meeting held by the Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday at Attica High School, a few of the 40 residents present questioned if city water was safe to drink, how home values might be affected, and if they were safe from chemicals that evaporate from groundwater through basement floors in homes. ...Kraft has offered to pay for ultraviolet air purifiers and modifications to about 130 homes to reduce the level of fumes. All but 28 homes have had the filters installed. Bhooma said levels of TCE fumes at 10 homes have dropped to acceptable levels. ...
