Pompton Lakes residents' group: Federal takeover needed in DuPont
pollution case
BY ANDREA ALEXANDER The Record (NJ) December 16, 2009POMPTON LAKES - One by one, residents of a pollution-threatened neighborhood told state health officials about the cancers they were being treated for, or a relative was suffering from, or the tumor that killed their neighbor. And many of the more than 500 people packing the high school auditorium Tuesday night vented frustrations a week after the state Health Department released a finding that kidney cancer rates in women and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma rates in men are significantly elevated in the neighborhood, where toxic chemical vapors are rising through the soil. ...Several residents also said they wanted federal officials to take authority over the cleanup of groundwater contaminated with solvents from a closed DuPont munitions factory. Also, immediately before the meeting, the residents' group Citizens for a Clean Pompton Lakes released a 10-point plan for dealing with the contamination. It called for listing the DuPont works site on the National Priority Superfund list. The citizens group released its proposal in concert with Edison Wetlands Association, an environmental advocacy organization. ...
