Koppers will close its plant in GainesvilleThe move to shut down the plant could make it easier to clean up the contaminated site. By Anthony Clark Gainesville Sun (FL) December 23, 2009Koppers Inc. is closing its Gainesville wood treatment facility and selling it to Beazer East Inc., a move that could speed up cleanup of the toxic Superfund site. Beazer East is a related company partly responsible for funding cleanup efforts. Both companies are based in Pittsburgh, Pa. Koppers President and CEO Walt Turner said in a news release Tuesday that the economic downturn had a significant impact on Gainesville operations. He said Koppers will continue to supply Southeastern utility pole customers from its Florence, S.C., facility. The Gainesville plant near Northwest 23rd Avenue and North Main Street treated and distributed utility poles, marine pilings and marine lumber. ...
