Downtown Safeway closing By Michelle Dynes Wyoming News February 4, 2010CHEYENNE - Safeway is set to close its 50-year-old grocery store on Pioneer Avenue at the end of the month. The Safeway chain sold the store and its property in the 2500 block of Thomes Avenue to the state of Wyoming for $2.6 million, state construction manager Rich Cathcart said. ...Cathcart added that the state also plans to address the contamination on the site. The Safeway chain bought the Thomes Avenue property more than half a decade ago to replace the Pioneer Avenue grocery with a larger neighborhood store. But soil and groundwater contamination was discovered beneath the property and interrupted plans to expand. The mix of chemicals may be the result of dry cleaning businesses and auto repair shops that once stood on the same lots, according to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. ...
