Davenport to cap west end brownfield Tory Brecht Quad City Times February 23, 2010A 12-acre automobile graveyard, littered with contaminated "auto fluff" on Davenport's industrial west end, soon could be capped and converted to green space. The city acquired the former Zenith Corp. site in 2005 after the company donated the brownfield area that had been used as an unregulated dump since the 1970s. The site is located just to the north of West River Drive about a half-mile west of the Credit Island Park entrance. Brownfield donations typically offer tax breaks and help property owners avoid expensive fines and cleanup. Auto "fluff" is what remains after cars are crushed and salvaged for useable parts, said Cindy Quast, a brownfields department manager for Stanley Consultants of Muscatine, Iowa, which is assisting the city on the site cleanup project. This includes ground-up batteries, car seats, dashboards and other debris that often contain heavy metals and organic contaminants. ...
