North Wilkesboro vision emerges By Monte Mitchell WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL (NC) March 4, 2010A jackhammer echoed through North Wilkesboro yesterday, taking down the town-owned parking deck and signaling the beginning of changes expected to transform the southern edge of downtown. Town officials envision new roads, a new fire station and maybe even a new music venue downtown. They are getting ready to get started on a 28-acre redevelopment project that has been dubbed "Block 46" because when the town was incorporated, the area was in Block 46 on the map. ...Shepherd Real Estate has the property under contract for purchase provided that the state approves a brownfield agreement. A brownfield is an abandoned or idled property where concerns about possible environmental contamination hinder redevelopment. A brownfield agreement with the state would list things that should be done to clean up the property so it could be redeveloped. ...
