Stephen Antalics Jr. -- South Bethlehem is rising from the ashes

Stephen C. Antalics Jr., a retired scientist and entrepreneur and Bethlehem resident, has been researching the city's South Side history.

The allegory of the mythical phoenix rising from the ashes might aptly describe the history of Bethlehem's South Side, commencing with its beginning as the borough of South Bethlehem to its present status as part of the city.

That proud and prosperous borough announced in its 1915 semi-centennial celebration souvenir journal the advantages for people and industry to locate there. In 1917, it succumbed to political pressure of a powerful group, headed by Bethlehem Steel founder Charles Schwab, that pressed for its merger with Bethlehem, a borough that viewed its southern neighbor as "Shantytown of Foreign Invaders."

This unholy alliance created the city of Bethlehem. It also signaled the beginning of the slow demise of that once proud South Bethlehem borough.
