Groundwater contamination found at Labelon site in Canandaigua

Canandaigua, N.Y. - Groundwater contamination at the site of the vacant Labelon building downtown will postpone plans for the building's redevelopment.

"It's premature to talk about remediation at this point," said Bart Putzig, regional hazardous waste remediation engineer with the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

The site is contaminated with "chlorinated solvents," said Putzig, and although there is no threat to the drinking water supply in the area, there is the possibility that "buildings on the site would have vapors coming into it." Putzig said the contamination is "moderate," and the state plans to investigate further.
