Former GM plant to be demolishedDECISION ANNOUNCED: Company cites contamination; work could start in July, last about 16 months By LAURA BOMYEA Waertown Daily Times (NY) March 25, 2010 MASSENA - It's official: the General Motors Powertrain plant is coming down.Owner Motors Liquidation Co. announced Wednesday the firm's intention to knock down the 50-year-old factory, starting as early as July. Demolition and associated cleanup activities are expected to last about 16 months, according to Motors Liquidation spokesman Steven Blow. Razing the 800,000-square-foot former auto factory will help the liquidation company to address more directly the federally mandated environmental cleanup there, particularly the site's extensive polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB, contamination, company officials have said. The location has been designated a Superfund site since the 1980s and remains under the oversight of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as demolition plans move forward. ...
