Groundwater contamination in Westbrook a problem? Jason Wheeler WCSH TV-6 News (Portland, ME) April 1, 2010WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Contamination at the site of a former electronics manufacturer could put Pike Industries expansion plans on hold. The contamination is from the Unitrode site, a former electronics producer that closed up shop in 1990, just hundreds of feet from where Pike has proposed plans to mine and blast for their asphalt and concrete manufacturing operations. From 1977 until the time Unitrode closed, chemicals like trichloroethylene, commonly associated with dry cleaning, had been leaking into the soil, and seeping into the groundwater. The Department of Environmental Protection already keeps tabs on the site, and residents are concerned that Pike's blasting could force those chemicals even closer to the nearby Stroudwater River and deeper into the groundwater. ...
