'Brownfield' stigma not worth economic development benefits, some Indian River landowners say

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - Sometimes passionate objections from a roomful of angry Oslo property owners Monday night may persuade county commissioners to remove most private properties from a proposed economic-development area under the Florida Brownfield Program.

"We heard you loud and clear," commission Chairman Peter O'Bryan told residents and other property owners in a workshop at the Brackett Library on the Indian River State College Mueller campus.

County officials had called the workshop to explain why they proposed designating about 600 acres southwest off 74th Avenue and Fifth Street Southwest as a Brownfield Area.
