Chamberlain plant to come down

WATERLOO - The city has hired a Hiawatha-based company to tear down 
what's left at the former Chamberlain Manufacturing Co.

Waterloo City council members voted unanimously Monday to approve a 
$547,427 contract with Thermal Concepts to demolish buildings at the 
former defense contractor's industrial complex at East Fourth and Esther 
streets, adjacent to Gates Park.

"It's long overdue," said Councilman Quentin Hart, who represents Ward 4 
where the site is located. "People are ready for that thing to go, happy 
to see it go."

More than half of the 500,000 square feet of Chamberlain buildings 
already have been torn down using state and federal grants. Grant funds 
also are being used to complete the task.
