State rejects Raytheon plan; neighbors want cleanup to start By MARK DOUGLAS News Channel 8/Tampa Bay Online (FL) May 20, 2010The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has rejected the Raytheon Co.'s latest plan to clean a spreading plume of groundwater contamination in St. Petersburg. A seven-page letter sent to Raytheon last week cites a number of technical shortcomings and poses additional questions about the 78 years it would take to clean polluted groundwater through methods including heat treatment, chemical injection, and a pump and treat system. A statement released by the Department of Environmental Protection said the agency wants "to ensure that the plan is designed to clean up the contamination effectively and expeditiously." ...
