Edgewater sets up redevelopment area By KELLY CUCULIANSKY Daytona Beach News-Journal (FL) May 20, 2010EDGEWATER -- There's a new era for a Southeast Volusia city trying to diversify and improve its tax base. The ERA -- or Edgewater Redevelopment Area -- got the official stamp of approval from the City Council this week. More than 700 parcels are part of the map designated for redevelopment and rehabilitation of abandoned or under-used commercial and industrial spaces. Spanning U.S. 1 from 10th Street to State Road 442, the ParkTowne Industrial Center and land along Park Avenue, the properties make up a brownfield, an area targeted for economic revitalization. But don't call it the b-word. While some still think of brownfields as polluted sites and abandoned or dilapidated factories, being part of one doesn't mean there is contamination. And it's that stigma that caused property owners to seek a different title. ...
