State won't help GT County with cleanup DNRE: No time or resources for recovery project BY BRIAN McGILLIVARY Traverse City Record-Eagle (MI) June 2, 2010TRAVERSE CITY - Grand Traverse County will go it alone if it hopes to force polluters to clean a badly contaminated site that threatens to leach gasoline products into West Bay. Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment lawyers don't have the time or resources to take on a cleanup recovery project at the intersection of Front and Division streets, county officials learned. The decision likely will prevent the state from recovering almost $2 million owed it for previous restoration efforts there that ceased in 2004, a troubling turn of events, county officials said. "I was shocked that the state wouldn't come in at some level," said Jean Derenzy, director of Grand Traverse County's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. ...
