Food Systems 101: Learning to Create Healthier Communities and Local
Economies
Sponsored by US EPA Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization July 29, 2010, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM, EDTSince the inception of the brownfields program, communities, mayors and local officials, non-profit organizations, funders and private sector partners have recognized the opportunities of creating a community asset on a former brownfields property. Agricultural and local food examples include using cleaning or creating new community gardens, urban farms, greenhouses, as well as creating farmer's markets, supermarkets, even a food bank. In the last several years, the EPA Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization, our State and Tribal partners, grantees and a range of community partners have been helping us to strengthen these efforts by providing technical support and assistance to communities interested in and engaged in urban agriculture and forging new partnerships with the broader planning, community economic development and public health community to identify how brownfields and land revitalization can contribute to expanding urban agricultural activities as well as link with growing food system planning efforts to improve community access to safe, affordable healthy food as one step toward creating healthier communities and local economies. Learn more about food systems planning, economic development, and the public health dimension of local food so we continue to explore how brownfield and land revitalization can help communities forge local food connections.
