County, city clash over Phoenix site By Drew C. Wilson Havelock News (NC) September 21, 2010Craven County commissioners pointed to Havelock, saying Monday that city officials needed to take the lead in pursing a federal grant to begin a cleanup at the abandoned Phoenix landfill recycling site. Meanwhile, the state entered into a contract with a Raleigh company to begin testing for hazardous metals and for the removal of capacitors at the site. The site is just outside Havelock city limits in Craven County between the Tucker Creek and MacDonald Downs subdivisions that are in the city limits. Craven commissioners told a group of Havelock officials during a meeting Monday that it would not act as the lead agency in an application for a Brownfield grant to conduct a more thorough assessment at the Phoenix landfill site. ...
