Hazardous chemical found at Laird site in Water Gap By Chad Smith Pocono Record (PA) September 30, 2010A technology company will start to determine the extent of contamination at its former facility after a potentially hazardous chemical was found in the site's soil. Laird Technologies Inc., in a notice to environmental officials, said its old Delaware Water Gap facility is contaminated with trichloroethene, or TCE, a chemical that removes grease. The notice, which it turned into the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, also says that the groundwater at the site on 1 Shielding Way is contaminated. Although many leading health organizations have disputed how toxic TCE is to humans - some have said that there is no clear link between the chemical and cancer while others say that TCE is a "probable human carcinogen" - it will be difficult to determine if the contamination at the Water Gap site poses a threat until the concentration of the chemical is known, according to Bob Lewis, DEP's manager of hazardous sites cleanup. ...
