Hazardous chemical found at Laird site in Water Gap

A technology company will start to determine the extent of contamination 
at its former facility after a potentially hazardous chemical was found 
in the site's soil.

Laird Technologies Inc., in a notice to environmental officials, said 
its old Delaware Water Gap facility is contaminated with 
trichloroethene, or TCE, a chemical that removes grease. The notice, 
which it turned into the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental 
Protection, also says that the groundwater at the site on 1 Shielding 
Way is contaminated.

Although many leading health organizations have disputed how toxic TCE 
is to humans - some have said that there is no clear link between the 
chemical and cancer while others say that TCE is a "probable human 
carcinogen" - it will be difficult to determine if the contamination at 
the Water Gap site poses a threat until the concentration of the 
chemical is known, according to Bob Lewis, DEP's manager of hazardous 
sites cleanup.
