Tainted Land Not Natural Stage for Wind Power Projects Daniel Robison WNED-AM 970 NEWS October 6, 2010LACKAWANNA - There's plenty of land in Western New York that's good for almost nothing. These parcels, called brownfields, were once home to heavy industry. Now they're so soaked with chemicals and dotted with rusting infrastructure that redevelopment is nearly out of the question. But some of this land is finding a new life as a home for wind energy. Driving through the sprawling former site of Bethlehem Steel, it's easy to see how it was once the largest plant of its kind in the country. Employing more than 30,000 people. Now it's a ghost town. There are hundreds of acres of trash, abandoned buildings, and tangly growth. A coyote trots ahead on the road. But when you get out of the car, suddenly you're at the base of wind turbines as tall as small skyscrapers. These are known as "Norm's Windmills." They're the pet project of Lackawanna Mayor Norman Polanski. He once worked at Bethlehem Steel, like his dad. But when the jobs left 30 years ago, they never came back. ...
