U.S. agency requests Sussex County dump to be added to Superfund list

SUSSEX COUNTY — A request was made today to add an old Sussex County 
dump that contaminated the drinking water of nearby homes to the 
Superfund National Priorities List, a move that would declare the spot 
one of the nation’s most hazardous waste sites.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency made the proposal for the site 
between Stanhope-Sparta Road and the East Brookwood housing development 
in Byram Township. The action stems from the 2005 discovery of 
trichloroethylene, or TCE, in the private wells of 18 homes, which 
prompted the state Department of Environmental Protection to install 
water filters and vapor control units in the residences.

"EPA is proposing to add this site to the Superfund list so we can fully 
address any contamination in this community, especially the toxic air 
contaminants that are seeping into some homes through their 
foundations," said EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck.
