Niles' Eastgate Shopping Plaza closer to demolition
Board approves plan leading to elimination of former shopping plaza.

ST. JOSEPH -- Once considered the place to shop for Niles-area 
residents, the Eastgate Shopping Plaza is just a shell of its former 
self, sitting vacant and dilapidated.

Good news does appear to be on the way. The Berrien County Board of 
Commissioners on Thursday unanimously approved a Berrien County 
Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Brownfield Plan that will ultimately 
lead to the destruction of the former shopping center in Niles Township 
just east of the city limits. The site could eventually make way for the 
birth of new development there. The Brownfield Plan will essentially 
allow ML Developers Inc., the company that earlier this year bought the 
52-acre site on Oak Street, to use tax increment financing from local 
property taxes for activities at the property.
