DEP Helps Community Clean-up Contaminated Land Press Zoom December 2, 2010(PressZoom.com) - (AUGUSTA)- The former Sammis property, located in the coastal Maine town of Hancock, which was vandalized and littered with containers of lubricants, waste oils, pesticides and ether, has been reclaimed as a public recreational site and water access trail. In 1960, Maine Central Railroad sold the property to railroad enthusiast Phillip Sammis to support his hobby of restoring old railroad cars and equipment. His tenure left behind a Quonset-hut style unsecured building and deteriorating containers of chemicals. In 2008, Crabtree Neck Land Trust (Trust) acquired the property with hopes of protecting public access along the rail line for recreational and working waterfront access purposes. However, a Quonset-style hut and deteriorating containers of chemicals stood in the way. The Trust contacted the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Brownfields Program which performed environmental site assessments using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. ...
