New contamination issue further delays Fremont projectDivided council chooses to move forward with housing and retail in Centerville district Matthew Artz Oakland Tribune (CA) January 27, 2011FREMONT -- Council members aren't throwing in the towel on a star-crossed housing and retail project in the Centerville district despite the recent discovery of more soil contamination on the site. The council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to continue exclusively negotiating with developer Blake Hunt Ventures, which has proposed nearly 200 apartments and about 14 shops on a 6.6-acre site fronting Fremont Boulevard between Thornton Avenue and Bonde Way. Negotiations stalled last year when soil vapor contaminates were found on the site, likely caused by a former dry-cleaning business, city officials said. Fremont spent about $13 million to purchase the land and remove contaminates roughly a decade ago, years before the soil vapors were included among contaminates for which testing was required. ...
