ECORSE: Mill Street industrial site not a current threat By Lisa Yensen Southgate News Herald (MI) January 29, 2011ECORSE - Former industrial property purchased by the city in 2004 is not an imminent threat to nearby residential areas, according to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The Mill Street site, along the North Branch of the Ecorse Creek, once was the home of Michigan Steel Works. A February 2008 DEQ document says four "critical contaminants" were detected there: manganese, chromium, lead and asbestos. "The main concern is particulates from asbestos and manganese," said Steve Hoin, DEQ senior geologist. "Most of the threat has been through inhalation." ...
