PCB-contaminated soil removal finished at former Stimson millsite

BONNER - A deposit of PCB-contaminated dirt along the Blackfoot River 
has been removed from the former Stimson Lumber Co. millsite.

The last of about 32,500 cubic yards of hazardous material was hauled 
out of Bonner in the final days of January, according to state 
Department of Environmental Quality project manager Keith Large. The 
project was supposed to be finished in December, but ran into 
difficulties because of the large amount of debris in the cleanup zone.

"There were all these logs and wooden cribbing and huge buried pieces of 
concrete wall right against the original streambank," Large said. "It 
had gotten buried over time. The one wall was pretty big, and it all had 
to be jack-hammered out of there. When you look at where our (test) 
borings were, we managed to drill right in between all that stuff."

The PCBs were mixed in sludge at the bottom of an old cooling pond that 
held water from the lumber mill's steam system before it was released 
into the Blackfoot. The toxic chemicals bonded with organic material in 
the sediments and did not wash away with the water.
